In the Morning
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
Psalm 5:3 (KJV)
David says “in the morning” twice, as if he wants to make sure we don’t miss it. Before the day gets loud, before the demands pile up, he speaks to God first.
The word “direct” is worth slowing down on. It carries the picture of setting something in order, the way a priest arranged the sacrifice on the altar or a commander drew up his troops in battle lines. David isn’t just tossing words into the air. He lays his requests out before God deliberately, one by one, and then he does the part we most often skip: he “will look up.”
He watches. He expects an answer.
How often do we pray in the morning and then forget we prayed at all? We hand God our worries and then pick them right back up and carry them all day, never stopping to look for His hand. David prays like a man who believes he is actually being heard. “My voice shalt thou hear” isn’t a hope. It’s a confident statement.
You don’t need eloquent words. You need a few honest minutes before the day takes over. Bring Him what’s actually on your mind, set it in order before Him, and then go about your day looking up. Watch for His answers in the ordinary hours. He hears you, and He has a habit of answering those who look for Him.
