“Stand firm” is easy to print on a shirt and hard to locate in the argument Paul is actually finishing.

The sentence

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:58, World English Bible

The “therefore” reaches back over the whole chapter. Paul has been arguing that Christ was raised, that the resurrection is not a metaphor, and that a faith with no resurrection is empty. Steadfastness here is not a personality type. It is what you do with your body and your work if the resurrection is true.

What shifts, and what does not

The culture under a church can move without the chapter moving. The temptation is to treat firmness as volume, or as nostalgia, or as refusal to learn anything. Paul ties it to labor that is not in vain. The footing is doctrinal, and the proof he offers the Corinthians is not a louder tone. It is the risen Christ, and then a life that keeps working because of him.

We will ask what this verse does not license: contempt, panic, or a private definition of “the Lord’s work” that never has to answer to the chapter above it.
